Text B Easter and others
Easter is a Christian festival. It occurs in springtime (March or April), and it has become traditional for women to wear new clothes on that occasion. Children receive Easter eggs made of chocolate.
The public holidays in Britain are as follows: Christmas Day and the day after (called Boxing Day), Good Friday and Easter Monday, and two other days which have no religious significance: (1)the Spring and Late Summer Bank Holidays. There is also New Year’s Day (January 1st). The main celebration is on New Year’s Eve. People stay up late to see the 31st and January 1st, church bells start ringing joyfully, and people, at their parties, drink a toast to the New Year, wishing their friends happiness and prosperity. (2)
The only other national festival is Guy Fawkes Day. This celebrates a historical event, when on November 5th, 1605, an attempt was made to blow up the English Parliament. The plot was discovered, and one of the conspirators, (3) Guy Fawkes, was arrested in the cellars of the House of Commons, where the gunpowder had been placed in readiness. So ever since, as November 5th approaches, children make a “guy” out of straw and beg for money to buy fireworks and burn the guy on a gig bonfire.
April Fool’s Day (April 1st) is hardly a festival, but nevertheless a day when you may find that someone has tied your shoe-laces together, or given you a false message from your employer, or played some other ingenious(4) joke on you to make you an “April Fool”.
There are many smaller festivals, like wedding anniversaries, Mother’s Day, various saints’ days and local customs. The only really important patriotic(5) festival is a solemn one: Remembrance Day, formerly called Armistice(6) Day (about November 11th), when the British remember the millions of people, both British and foreign, who died in two World Wars, and when they hope with all their hearts that such horrors will never occur again.
